Thou shall not kill. Thou shall not commit adultery. Don’t eat pork. I’m sorry, what was that last one? Don’t eat pork. God has spoken. Is it that the word of God or is that pigs trying to outsmart everybody? – Jon Stewert

July 31, 2008

When I found this quote, I knew it had to come here. It is as much criticism towards Islam as to the whole concept of belief in religion. Islam has many fine, strong and well made points, yet some seems to be a bit out of order.

I know the story behind the whole ‘Don’t eat pork’ thing. The pigs in the seventh century was sick and unhealthy, so it was suggested that people didn’t eat pork. Unfortunately, to the dissatisfaction of Muslims, they haven’t realised that pigs are edible now.

It also critise how religious believers tend to believe in anything, regardless of how stupid it may seem. Science then was idiotically stupid, while science now actually confirms religion.

* Please read the comment from Big Mike aswell regarding the second paragraph.

Well Muslims still don’t eat pork because they follow their religion- not because they are ignorant or stupid.
Glad to see that you’re understanding at least!

I have a couple of points to make in correction to this blog..

    1. Jon stewart is not refering to muslims in this quote.. Jon is jewish.. and those statements are a tennent of his own religion as stated in deuteronomy(a jewish text).. many religions hold pork as something they should not eat..

    2. The whole “pork back then would kill ya” argument (the resurgence of which I trace back to a comic named Chris Rock.. it didn’t originate with him.. but definitely gained popularity with his standup peice) is ludacris..
    a. a quick study of history shows that almost all the nations around the jewish nation(and many far away from that region) raised pork and had for centuries.. it was a staple.. if it had made tons of people sick, it would have been grouped with poison..
    b. both the Greek and Roman armies ran on salted pork!.. It was their primary food source.. and this would have been years upon years before any advancements in refrigeration and pork growing would be made..
    c. if history isn’t good enough, note that a majority of 3rd world countries still use pork as a primary food source.. and the sicknesses they die of are not attributed to eating pork.. but living in disease infested conditions

in conclusion.. their are many reasons pork may have been considered bad by the varied deity of those religious groups..
    a. pork as we know now is generally unhealthy.. high in toxins and fat.. that are attributed with causing heart related issues(although it is very very tasty)
    b. pigs are dirty.. they live in their own filth.. and will eat anything you throw in their pin(anything)…in the wild they are much like vultures.. they feed on dead carcasses and anything else they can find.. He may not have wanted them to be a part of that..
    c. The symolism alone of abstaining from an animal that contains those traits(making one unclean literally).. as it relates to one abstaining from a lifestyle that is dirty(sinfull) and makes you unclean spiritually…. is easily a good enough reason for me to understand the command

I am a Christian.. and I do eat pork.. however, I understand the picture that is being painted.. and the points that are being made.. spiritually clean life.. etc..

maybe I would be more healthy if I stayed away from pork.. its a good principle.. but the same principle applies to big macs also.. and pizza.. and..:>
